If you have received the email below, please remember that it is very common for these email scams to be redistributed at a later date with only slightly different content, such as a different subject or return address, or with the fake webpage(s) hosted on a different webserver.

We aim to report every variant of the scams we receive, so even if it appears that a scam you receive has already been reported, please submit it to us anyway.

Comments:
  • Email asks you to confirm/update/verify your account data at HSBC Bank by visiting the given link. You will be taken to a spoof website where your details will be captured for the phishers.

  • HSBC Bank never send their users emails requesting personal details in this way.

  • The spoof website this email links to was not online at time of this report, but variations of the scam which link to working websites are bound to exist, so be wary! The website may have been taken down or disabled by the hosts, but quite often these websites are hosted on the personal computer of the phishers, so may only be online at certain times.

  • The REAL URL of the spoof website looks nothing like the actual HSBC Bank URL.

We wrote to you recently about making sure your contact details are up to date in time for a new security feature being introduced for online transactions.

When setting up a payment to a new beneficiary or updating your telephone numbers we will confirm your identity in one quick and simple step - an automated call will be made to your chosen contact number and you will be asked to read out (or enter into your phone's keypad) a code which will be displayed in Internet Banking. Once the code has been recognised the instruction will then be authorised. If none of the contact numbers we hold are appropriate to call you on at the time, the transaction could be delayed (by up to 48 hours) while alternative checks are undertaken.

For more information, take a look at our FAQ or click here.

The first service we'll introduce this for will be "Send Money Overseas" and it will also be introduced when you update your telephone numbers. It will be added to other Internet Banking services throughout 2009.

You can check and update your contact numbers if necessary by clicking on 'My details' and then 'Personal details'.

Thank you for banking with HSBC.
