Spoof email links to a spoof webpage where victim is prompted to enter their details believing the site is genuine. Details are then forwarded to a local script and captured.

WARNINGS

1. Email claims to be from Earthlink asking you to confirm your account data by clicking on the link. You will be taken to a spoof login page where your details will be captured by the phishers.

2. Earthlink never send users emails requesting details in this way.

3. Website traced to USA.

4. URL of spoof website choosen to look real at a glance, but is actually spelt slightly differently, with an 'n' instead of a 'k' in 'earthlink'.

5. Spoof website not online at time of report, but likely to resemble a login page for Earthlink.

 

" According to our records, the card associated with your EarthLink account is about to expire. ..."

If you have received this email, please remember that it is very common for these email scams to be redistributed at a later date with only slightly different content or the same but with the fake page(s) hosted by a different provider. Also, once you have received one of these hoaxes, it is also common place to receive at least another one and usually a day or two after the first, although not necessarily from the same apparent sender.

your EarthLink account is about to expire.

To ensure uninterrupted service and avoid a possible
reactivation fee, please update your credit card information
right away (or as soon as your replacement card arrives in
the mail).

You can easily verify/update your credit card information on
your "My Account" Web page:

http://myaccount.earthlihk.com/

You can also update your credit card information by calling
1-888-EARTHLINK and using our automated phone system. Select
the option for "billing" and have the following information
ready:

* The phone number associated with your account
* The credit card number you wish to use, including
the expiration date
* One of the following -- your email address, password,
secret word, or PIN

We value you as a subscriber, and appreciate your prompt
attention to this matter.
